Description

“Untold: The Race of the Century”: will be shown on Saturday, February 18th at SSA with remarks and audience discussion led by Eddie Trevelyan. Eddie served as crew member on Dennis Conner’s Liberty Syndicate in the 1983 America’s Cup. After being invited to join Dennis, the team trained for 18 months for the historic race in Newport, RI. After winning the Elimination Trials, Liberty went on to race in the Finals. They lost the series 4-3 to the Australians – a first American loss in the Cup’s 135 year history.

A note about our speaker:

Eddie Trevelyan has been racing since his junior days in Sabots, Lasers and Snipes in CA. He won the Prince of Wales Bowl in 1976 at Marina del Rey, CA and again in 1977 in Hingham, MA. He has an innate ability to work with high-powered teams laser focused on the end game.

Eddie entered the international stage of yacht racing when he crewed for Robbie Haines in the Star World’s in San Diego, CA in 1973. He then raced in the Soling Class with Robbie Haines and Rod Davis, from 1978 through 1984. The unstoppable team of Haines - Trevelyan - Davis won the 1978 North Americans in Newport Beach, CA, the 1979 Worlds in Visby, Sweden, and then 1st in the 1979 US Nationals in Miami, FL. They placed 2nd in the 1980 Worlds in Ponce, Puerto Rico, won Kiel Week in Germany in ’79,’80’, ’81 and also won the 1980 US non-Olympic Trials (US boycotted the 1980 Olympics in the Soviet Union) in Newport, RI. They won the 1984 Soling Class Olympic Gold Medal for USA in Long Beach CA.

Eddie and his crew currently campaign their Etchells, Coyote, and will race in the 2023 North Americans and Worlds.

Remarks by Eddie about the background to the movie will begin at 5:45 with the film beginning at 6. The evening should wrap up about 8 pm.
